COCA-MARY

From Coca-Cola sales to red trucks: Mary veneration in Mexico

2022 - MEXICO

During my trip for a photoreportage, I traveled to the city in Mexico to witness the annual veneration of Mary. As I arrived early to the town square, I saw the residents busy decorating the area with readily available materials, such as paper streamers and flowers, and even an old Coca-Cola sail to provide shelter. “We are just simple and dying souls, so materials were used that were available,” one resident told me.

The ceremony began with the statue of Mary being placed on a red truck and driven through the city, accompanied by a group of musicians playing traditional instruments. People participating in the procession sang hymns and prayed as they followed the statue. It was clear to see that the veneration of Mary was an important part of the life of this community.

As I walked through the city, I saw how people had given up their everyday activities to participate in the procession. Some carried flowers and candles, while others recited prayers or moved rosaries. It was impressive to see how people set aside their everyday lives to show their veneration for Mary.

Although the procession and ceremony were held in a traditional style, I also saw modern influences in the veneration of Mary. Some people wore T-shirts with images of Mary and there were also posters and banners with her image on display. These modern elements showed how Mary still plays an important role in the lives of people in this community today.

What makes this procession unique compared to others around the world is the way it combines traditional and modern elements, as well as the practical and everyday materials used to venerate Mary. It was a valuable experience for me to be a part of this unique and traditional ceremony and to see how the veneration of Mary brings the community together.
