CLUB MOSKOU

At the performance Club Moscow, we brought the dream of Moscow to life. Club Moscow is a performance based on the classic text ‘Three Sisters’ by Anton Chekhov combined with the contemporary escapism of the techno club the Marktkantie. I created this performance as a graduation project of my directing course in Amsterdam. In collaboration with seven other graduating students.

In Club Moscow, we follow four young people on their search for unconditional love, total self-development and a beautiful life. They hope to find this in the techno club where they meet, a place where strangers become friends, borders blur and time is forgotten.

In the production, Moscow symbolises the unattainable utopia, the place where everything seems possible and where the characters can leave their problems behind.

“MOSKOU! MOSKOU! All our dreams and desires are in Moscow!” My life is Moscow, the city I have never seen and will never visit. But I dream of Moscow.”

This text shows how the characters in Club Moscow project their hopes and expectations onto Moscow. And it highlights the mental and physical distance the characters in Club Moscow feel between their current life and their dream of a better life in Moscow. What reinforces this feeling, too, is the increasingly loud music, and the fact that the performers are dancing nonstop for an entire hour and a half.

” Moscow, Moscow, what a distance to Moscow!”

We hope the footage shown below gives an idea of the atmosphere and feeling we wanted to create in this performance. It has been our attempt to bring the dream of Moscow to life on stage and to take the audience to another world full of longing for a moment.
