For Colours, I collaborated with Israeli pianist Avishai Darash to explore the boundaries of the musical genre. We started with his love of Arabic music as a starting point, and I then began to look for stories that fit the theme of Avishai’s musical work.
As creative director, I started exploring Avishai’s personal struggles and how this is reflected in the present day.
I reached out to young boxers from international ranks who have to fight their way to the top and where the difference between right and wrong is sometimes thin. I was interested in their stories and how their personal struggles relate to the theme of Avishai’s musical work. To capture their stories, I trained with them for a while and captured their stories in a photo reportage.
The idea behind the photo-reportage was to document the fighters’ personal stories and turn them into an outline for a narrative. This story could then be used to create a theatre text for the performance. By doing this photo-reportage, I hoped to get a better understanding of the boxers’ personal struggles and how this connects to the theme of Colours.
Although we are still working on this research, we have already made a first impression of the process so far and are on our way to further developing a performance.
