A FISHERMAN'S TALE

Navigating the dangers of the sea: An Indonesian fisherman's tale

2019 - INDONESIA

While traveling in Indonesia, I had the opportunity to witness the daily life of fishermen working on the rocky coast. I followed three fishermen as they navigated their way through the clear blue waters, catching an array of colorful fish.

But as we went about our work, an earthquake had occurred on the other side of the ocean. A Tsunami alarm had been issued, but due to our focus on fishing, we had missed this important warning. Without us realizing it, large waves began to form, nearly sweeping us off the rocks. I held onto a rock for dear life as I watched the fishermen cling to their nets, praying for our survival.

Fortunately, we were able to make it to land, but my camera was not as fortunate. It was destroyed by the rough waves, a reminder of the life and death of the sea. The sea gives and takes, a constant force of both hate and love. In Indonesia, the sea also holds a spiritual significance, as it is often associated with the gods.

This experience reminded me of the power and majesty of the sea, and I am grateful to have survived its unpredictable nature. It was a poignant reminder to always be aware of the forces at work around us, and to respect the power of the sea.
